 KENZAN: SATSUMA VASE WITH WISEMEN
 Glazed ceramic with paint and gold. Japan, Meiji era
 Ovoid form on a flush foot, short neck with beaded,
 flared lip. Two large medallion fields with lobed-
 pointed contours. The scenes are full of figures
 and depict bearded wisemen, some of whom are
 surrounded by smaller figures (children?). The other
 image features musicians, one of the bearded men
 dancing, some drinking. In the background are
 old pine trees and a splashing waterfall. The filler
 spaces have golden motifs against a shiny dark-
 blue background. On the bottom is the following
 inscription inside a heart-shaped contour: on the
 right, KEN-ZAN ᷚⰙ, in the middle, Satsumayaki
 啑 㐑 䃤 (Satsuma ceramic); on the left, Toki 昞☐
 (ceramic), as well as the Shimazu family crest.
