A TATEMONO IN THE STYLE OF
HOKUSAI OF BIJIN ON HORSEBACK
Tatemono painting with colors on silk.

This smaller scroll painting shows a very
finely painted image with a brown horse
at its center. Two baskets on its back, each
containing a bijin, both with pinned-up hair
and smoking pipes. A servant is kneeling on
the ground in front of the horse and tying
his sandals. A stone lantern, or ishidoro,
with a flaming pearl between two tree
trunks behind the group. The background
is very large and fades into the distant
haze. Signature HOKU-SAI I-ITSU ⊿ 滳 䁢
ᶨ hitsu 䫮 and red seal on the right. Very
finely mounted with silk and silk brocade,
wood jikusaki.
