supported on a low, spreading foot and rising to
a short, waisted neck, the body painted in dark
brown with a scrolling foliate vine between line
borders, a brown-painted petal band encircling
the neck, all against an ivory-toned glaze save
for the foot

A LARGE PAINTED ‘CIZHOU’
‘DRAGON AND PHOENIX’ JAR
YUAN / MING DYNASTY
robustly potted, rising from a flat foot to broad,
rounded shoulders and a short waisted neck,
freely painted with a dragon coveting a ‘flaming
pearl’ among scrolling clouds within a scalloped
reserve, the reverse with a phoenix, set
between line borders and below a floral band at
the shoulder, all painted in deep brown tones
over a cream slip and under a clear glaze, the
recessed foot unglazed
height 14½ in., 37 cm
