A HUANGHUALI FIVE-TIERED PICNIC BOX
MING DYNASTY, 16TH – 17TH CENTURY
of rectangular form composed of five removable tiers and
a close-fitting cover, supported on a base of conforming
shape flanked by spandrels and joined at the top with an
angular handle, the cover and trays secured into position by a
removable rod inserted beneath the handle

Tiered boxes were used as portable containers for food or for
scholar’s objects and may consist of two or three fitted tiers,
an internal tray and a lid supported on a grooved base frame
with an overhead handle, often seen in paintings and prints
depicting scholarly life in the Ming Dynasty.
