This finely painted vase is replete with symbols of longevity,
including the deer and pine trees. The artisan has masterfully
modulated the cobalt tones to create texture and variation
in this continuous scene. Short, concise lines are used
to meticulously detail the texture of the deers’ fur while
broader, deep inky strokes lend weight and texture to the
tree trunks and rocks.
Vases of this remarkable painting and form are rare. See
one similarly decorated with three ribs at the neck, but
painted with a figural scene, illustrated in John Ayers,
Chinese Ceramics in the Baur Collection, vol. IV, Geneva,
1974, pl. A506; another, decorated with Buddhist lions, is
illustrated in S.W. Bushell, Oriental Ceramic Art, London,
1981, pl. LXXI.
