Clambering on, the beast’s scaly and muscular bodies create
a dramatic contrast to the otherwise undecorated vessel.
See a jade bowl, similarly carved with chilong to the sides,
in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco (accession no.
B60J456), illustrated in Later Chinese Jades: Ming Dynasty
to Early Twentieth Century, San Francisco, 2007, pl. 183;
475 and a similar oval waterpot sold at Christie’s Hong Kong,
30th October 1994, lot 460.
