               A fine small white jade pebble carving of two
               horses
               18th century
               The white stone skilfully carved as two entwined horses with cheeks
               placed affectionately together, each with one leg resting on the
               other’s flank and the other legs tucked underneath their bodies, their
               tails sweeping around each other. 5cm (2in) long

               The motif of two horses was popular from the Song Dynasty where
               they were often depicted biting each other. From the Yuan Dynasty
               the preference appears to have developed to show the horses resting
               affectionately on each other, as in the current lot. For a very similar jade,
               dated to the Yuan/Ming Dynasty, see the catalogue of the Hong Kong
               Museum of Art exhibition, Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong, 1996,
               no.136. Another small white jade carving of a single horse, dated to the
               Qing Dynasty, is included in the same exhibition as no.175.
