           SEAL MARK AND PERIOD OF QIANLONG

           of archaistic jue form, the U-shaped body raised on three
           cylindrical legs and surmounted by a pair of capped posts, set
           with an angular handle on one side, covered overall in a deep
           aubergine glaze, the base inscribed with a four-character seal
           mark under the glaze, wood stand and Japanese box
           12.1 cm, 4¾ in.

           Closely related aubergine-glazed jue vessels from the Qianlong
           reign include one in the Baur Collection, illustrated in The Baur
           Collection, vol. 2, Geneva, 1969, no. A473; another alongside
           a dou vessel, included in The Tsui Museum of Art. Chinese
           Ceramics IV. Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1995, pls 44-45; and
           one from the Jingguantang Collection, sold at Christie’s Hong                              688

                                                                      the exterior painted with four roundels enclosing stylised
                                                                      characters reading shangao shuichang (‘lofty mountains,
                                                                      lengthy river’), interspersed amongst lotus sprays and the
                                                                      bajixiang, the interior with a shou medallion, the base inscribed
                                                                      with a Qianlong bingwu mark (in accordance with 1786)
                                                                      18.1 cm, 7⅛ in.

                                                                      This dish belongs to a group of distinctive porcelains dated to
                                                                      Qianlong bingwu year (1786), where bowls as well as dishes
