A BLUE AND WHITE ‘XIXIANG JI’ BOWL Provenance:
Chenghua mark Bequest of William Rhinelander Stewart, 1929

Painted in rich cobalt blue tones with a continuous scene from the
Xixiang ji (Romance of the Western Chamber) to the exterior, with 來源:
figures in a courtly setting, below an everted rim with beribboned William Rhinelander Stewart 遺贈,1929 年
objects on a cell ground, the interior center with two boys in a garden 大都會藝術博物館,1929 年迄今
setting, the cavetto plain, and floral sprays on a cell ground to interior
rim, an encircled Chenghua six-character mark to the base. The scenes from the Xixiang ji (Romance of the Western Chamber),
8 1/4in (21cm) diam include depictions of Student Zhang. They may depict a number of
possible scenarios from Scenes 13, 22 and 23 in Book 7; or possibly
$2,000 - 3,000 scene 9 from Book 2.
