and his wife’s passion for this category was so profound, that in 1915
he wrote to his father requesting a loan of $2 million to acquire Chinese
porcelain. The loan was granted, and the couple spent $1,657,000 on
pieces from the collection of John Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913). They
continued to acquire porcelains from leading dealers such as Duveen,
Gorer, Frank Partridge, C. T. Loo, Yamanaka, Ralph M. Chait, Tong-
Ying & Co., Parish-Watson & Co., and others. Upon his death, he left
over 400 Chinese porcelains to The Metropolitan Museum of Art
