A RARE PAINTED CIZHOU FIGURE OF
BUDDHA
JIN DYNASTY (1115-1234)
The Buddha is shown on a lotus base raised on a
tall, waisted plinth, seated in dhyanasana with the
right hand held in abhayamudra and the left hand
in varadamudra, wearing loose robes decorated
with floral patterns in brown and red on a cream
slip under a clear glaze.

Japanese private collection, acquired prior to
World War II.
A similar painted Cizhou figure, but with the
addition of green enamels, was excavated in 1972
from Fengfeng Mining District, Handan City, and
is illustrated in Complete Collection of Ceramics
Art Unearthed in China – 3 – Hebei, Beijing, 2008,
no. 192, where it is dated to the Jin dynasty. For
