A GUANGZHOU (CANTON) ENAMEL EUROPEAN-SUBJECT
RECTANGULAR TRAY
Qianlong period, circa 1740-1750
Painted with Western gentlemen in seventeenth century attire, four
grouped to one side of the scene, one seated on a mat that is draped
over the wizened trunk of an old tree whilst before him a winged putti
prostrates with two further figures behind carrying vessels or gifts,
all set in a lake landscape with pine and wutong trees near cliffs to
one side, the everted sides painted with floral panels on a yellow cell
ground with ruyi cloud lappets at the corners and with a gilt metal rim,
the base of the tray fantastically painted with two colorful confronted
dragons amidst swirling waves and clouds painted in shades of gray,
the everted sides with a cracked-ice pattern with delicate blossoms.
