A HONGMU AND BURLWOOD LOW CIRCULAR TABLE
19th century
The table with a fine burlwood top set within a circular frame above a
narrow waist and cusped, beaded aprons finely carved with archaistic
chilong designs, the whole raised on beaded ruyi cabriole legs ending
in upturned feet.

This unusual circular table was probably used to support a large
vessel or drum. Compare with a similar low circular stand, supported
on cabriole legs and carved with lion masks and scrolling tendrils,
illustrated by R.H.Ellsworth in Chinese Furniture: One Hundred
Examples from the Mimi and Raymond Hung Collection, New York,
1996, pp. 124-125, no. 42.
Compare with a related huanghuali circular low table, 18th/19th
century, which was sold at Christie’s New York, 19 March 2021,
lot 835.

Qing Dynasty/Republic Period
Of cylindrical form, finely hollowed with thick sides, gently waisted, the
363 recessed foot with plug, the wood of dark chocolate-brown tone with
attractive graining.
