These ascetic Shakyamuni fgures seated in similar
posture, appeared during the Yuan dynasty and
were very popular. The present fgure depicts the
Buddha Shakyamuni as an ascetic prior to his
enlightenment. The Buddha underwent periods
of extreme fasting, and the efect this privation
had on his body is illustrated by the protruding
ribs and spine of the kneeling fgure. Compare
this lot with a gilt-bronze seated fgure of the
ascetic Shakyamuni, sold at Christie’s New York,
18 September 2014, lot 709.
