This unusual and extraordinary jade carving belongs to a
small group of pendants masterfully modelled in the shape of
a dragon with a sinuous body grooved to resemble a twisted
rope. See a closely related example of a dragon pendant in
the Cleveland Museum of Art, illustrated in Handbook of the
Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH, 1991. p. 9. Another
similar jade dragon pendant also with a twist-rope design is
in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, illustrated in Na Zhiliang,
Yuqi cidian [Dictionary of Chinese Jade], Hong Kong, 1985,
 p. 47, fig. 0238. See an excavated example of a phoenix jade
pendant also with a similar rope-twist design, late Warring
States period, currently in the Anhui Provincial Institute of
Archaeology, illustrated in Yang Boda, Zhongguo yuqi quanji
[Complete collection of Chinese jades], vol. 3, Hebei, 2005,
 pl. 284.
