A ‘JIZHOU’ ‘PAPERCUT’ ‘PHOENIX’ Jizhou ‘papercut’ bowls are found in several
BOWL important collections, including a ‘magpie and
prunus’ version in the Museum of Fine Art,

Boston (acc. no. 98.12); a ‘phoenix’ teabowl
of conical form, the interior covered in a ! nely in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. no.
marbled glaze of sandy-beige su< used with a 29.100.222); and a ‘phoenix’ teabowl in the
network of thin co< ee-black lines all transmuting Asian Art Museum, Seattle (acc. no. 36.6). A
to peacock-blue hues just below the rim, a pair of conical ‘phoenix’ bowl of this type from the
dark brown stylized phoenix soaring around the Yang De Tang Collection sold in these rooms,
interior walls amid peony blossoms of the same 17th March 2015, lot 93; and a similar bowl the
color, the exterior applied with a dark chocolate- collection of Mr. and Mrs. Myron S. Falk, Jr., sold
brown glaze splashed in three areas with milky at Christie’s New York, 16th October 2001, lot
beige tones, the glaze ending neatly at the knife- 92. Additional examples of ‘papercut’ ‘phoenix’
cut biscuit foot, Japanese wood box (3) bowls from Jizhou include one from the Muwen
Diameter 5¾ in., 14.6 cm Tang Collection sold in our London rooms, 12th
November 2003, lot 66; and a slightly larger
PROVENANCE version that sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 29th
Collection of a Japanese Tea Master (by repute). October 2001, lot 554.
