               SIGNED BY NIANQU, LATE QING-EARLY REPUBLIC PERIOD
                                                                 ⓺័ߴ㠺厍᭢᫔ᰠǮሗࡅ
               The greyish stone is carved in a naturalistic form, the edges are
               delicately carved in low relief with densely scrolling clouds. The   㙄㪪ᆨ⓺⏁ǯߴ㠺厍  ✙㧾⩞ࣸჺⵖء卿ㄍᝳ⡚ᢐְᄂℒǯ❥㢙
               pinkish-grey inclusion to the edge of the underside is embellished   ޔ⽗཰೥ओǯሗࡅߴǯ
               with a river coursing through rocks. The side of the base is
               inscribed ‘shui gui tong’ in archaic script, indicating the name of   㢲቎            卿ໃሗࡅ卿᱆ᮅ᫔໫⥂   իᴓᰲ   ՞ǯ᳖ថᭆ
               the mine, and signed Nianqu. The box is decorated with a prunus   ߝംՒ໶Ǯໝ⩢ǯ
               branch and is also inscribed and signed Nianqu.

               Qian Xun (1853-1927), sobriquet Nianqu, born in Zhejiang,
               was a scholar and diplomat in the Late Qing to early Republic
               period. He was sent on diplomatic missions worldwide, such
               as to Japan, Korea, Europe and Russia, including serving as
               minister to the Netherlands and Italy. At the end of his career
               he held a position under Yuan Shikai.
