The Buddha is seated in dhyanasana, with his right hand lowered in
bhumisparshamudra and his left hand in dhyanamudra. He wears a flowing
sanghati with incised borders, and his face is downcast with elongated eyes
and a benevolent expression, and flanked by long pendulous earlobes. The
hair is arranged in spiral curls over the ushnisha and topped by a finial.
16√ in. (43 cm.) high
PROVENANCE
A German private collection, acquired in 1969
While a few comparable examples exist in private collections, very rarely
have such significant bronze figures of Buddha from this period come to
the market. Compare the present figure with an important bronze figure
of Amoghasiddhi Buddha from circa 1200, sold in The Sublime and the
Beautiful: Asian Masterpieces of Devotion sale at Christie’s New York, 20
March 2014, lot 1614 (fig. 1).
The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test
number N115a70 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
