A RED-LACQUERED WOOD KATANA-KAKE
(SWORD STAND)
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Set on two straight bracket feet with lobed supports
for two swords, the stretcher pierced and carved with
Chinese figures on a boat heading towards a thatched
dwelling between narrow bands of keyfret, the two end
feet foldable and carved in low relief with dense peony
blooms and foliage; unsigned.

A GOLD- AND SILVER-LACQUER TACHIKAKE
(STAND FOR A SLUNG SWORD)
Edo period (1615-1868), mid-19th century
Of standard form, the lobed rounded square base
supported on four bracket feet, with an indentation for
the end of the sword, the upright curved, the three-lobed
top support in the usual suhama shape, the entire surface
except for the gold-lacquered chiri-i (edges to the base)
covered in black lacquer and decorated in gold and
silver togidashi maki-e on a fine gold hirame and nashiji
ground with autumn plants including different varieties
of chrysanthemum, ajisai (hydrangea), hagi (bush clover,
Lespedeza bicolor), susuki (plume grass, Miscanthus
sinensis), the base finished in dense gold nashiji; with a
wood storage box inscribed outside Togidashi akikusa
maki-e tachikake (Slung-sword stand with autumn plants
in maki-e).
