SANSHANQIAOZI ZHUCHU
REPUBLIC PERIOD, DATED DINGMAO YEAR,
CORRESPONDING TO 1927

carved to one side in boyi style with a landscape scene depicting
a scholar traveling on horse, accompanied by his attendant, all
below a large overhanging prunus tree, the reverse inscribed with
the poem Bayue shiwu yezeng Zhang Gongcao (Ode to Lunar
August Fifteenth for Zhang Gongcao), written by the famous Tang
dynasty poet Han Yu, followed by an inscription reading shizai
dingmaonian huayue shanghuan Sanshanqiaozi Zhuchu zuo (made
by Sanshanqiaozi Zhuchu, within the rst ten days of the second
month of dingmao year), the seal face carved in zhuwen with
eighteen characters reading jibainian renjia wufei jishan diyideng
haoshi haishi dushu (for many years, people have been trying to do
good deeds, but the best good deed one can truly do is studying)

 nely carved with a scholar gazing at the moon in a pavilion by
the river, all surrounded by mountains, trees and clouds, incised
to the right with an inscription reading cipin wei gengwu diyi deyi
zhizuo Qingtian Jin Nan bingji liuyue (best work in the year of
gengwu, carved and inscribed in June by Jin Nan from Qingtian),
the left side with a poetic verse taken from a poem written by the
Yuan dynasty poet Qian Weishan

Asian Art, Bath, England, carved in a very similar style with a
landscape scene depicting the Song dynasty scholar Su Shi
boating under the Red Cli , included in the exhibition Inaugural
Exhibition. Chinese Metalwares and Decorative Arts, vol. 2, the
Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, 1993, cat. no. 333.
