IS8 — KIOTO POTTERY.
No. 346,
Incised upon a Flower Holder of pottery, made by
Rengetsu, a poetess and potter now living in Kioto. The
three characters to the left are her signature, and the others
are the verses with which the piece is covered. They are
written in Hira-kana characters, with two or three Chinese
words, and run as follows : Koko o seto kisoi watarishi
MONONOFU NO NATO NAGARETARU UZI NO KAWA MIZU.
Mr. Kawakami renders this historic ode into English
thus :
It is with the names of two rival warriors.
Who strove, in crossing its current,
To be the first in the field.
That the waters of the river of Uji have ever flown.
