The grotesque creature with wide open mouth containing a ball, its Seated on an oval base, its head turned back and one foreleg raised,
head and body covered with natural hair and its eyes inlaid. a single tensho character carved in relief beneath, the somewhat worn
ivory with a good patina.
An almost identical example from the W. L. Behrens collection is illustrated
in Joly, LIJA, opp.p.279, and in Weber, KH, vol.1, pl.XXIX, no.2.
The saigyu (Chinese xiniu) is a goat-like creature with horns, often
regarded as one of the varied types of kirin.
