AN UNUSUAL FAMILLE ROSE SCROLL-
FORM WRIST REST
18TH-19TH CENTURY
Of oval section, the wrist rest is made in
imitation of a rolled scroll covered in diaper-
patterned brocade, tied with a gold cord
with gold clasps, and with a title slip, Leshan
Tang (Hall of Delighting in Virtue), in black
followed by two red seals on a gold ground.
6æ in. (17 cm.) long
$15,000-20,000
Similarly-decorated scroll or book-form utensils
and boxes inscribed with Leshan Tang marks
were produced during the Qianlong period.
Compare a closely related scroll-form famille
rose toothpick holder in the National Palace
Museum, Taiwan, illustrated in Emperor Ch’ien-
lung’s Grand Cultural Enterprise, Taipei, 2002,
p. 58, no. I-48 decorated with a similar brocade
cover and a Leshan Tang mark reserved on a
gilt ground as found on the present example.
See, also, a famille rose incense box of very
similar form to the present wrist rest and with a
similar treatment of the scroll-form ends, sold at
Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 25 April 2004, lot 57.
