AN YIXING ENAMELED VASE
SIGNED SHEN XI, DAOGUANG PERIOD (1821-1850)

The bulbous body is decorated with a wide band of impressed leiwen diaper covered in a reddish-brown slip, below
a narrow impressed petal-lappet border. The neck is decorated with sprays of chrysanthemum and prunus in famille
rose enamels on a blue ground, below an upright band of blue leaf tips that rise to fve lobes forming the ‘garlic head’
mouth. The base has two impressed marks, one circular, reading bai, the other rectangular, reading Shen Xi.

Shen Xi was a traditional Yixing artist recorded to have been active during the Daoguang period.

enamels around the neck with foral sprays, on a blue ground, is illustrated in Purple Clay: Wellington Wang’s Collection of Yixing
Wares, Taipei, 1993, p. 203. See, also, the pair of famille rose-enameled vases with Shen Xi marks, from the collection of Mr.
and Mrs. Gerard Hawthorn, sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 28 November 2011, lot 269. A very similar pair of Yixing enameled
vases, also signed Shen Xi, was sold at Christie’s New York, 19-20 September 2013, lot 1415.
