A CIZHOU-TYPE CREAM-GLAZED PILLOW
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY (AD 960-1127)
The ruyi-form top is raised on conforming sides and is carved with a leafy peony stem,
reserved on a ring-punched ground. The pillow is covered allover in a cream glaze over a
white slip that stops at the foot and around the front panel of the base.

A Cizhou-type pillow of different form, but similarly carved on top with a leafy peony stem set against
a ring-punched ground, from the estate of Walter Hochstadter and Alice Chu, was sold at Christie’s
New York, 24-25 March 2011, lot 1320.
Oxford Authentication thermoluminescence test no. P111b45 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
