A SET OF FOUR INSCRIBED SPINACH-GREEN JADE RECTANGULAR PLAQUES
QIANLONG-JIAQING PERIOD, DATED TO THE JIAXU CYCLICAL YEAR CORRESPONDING TO EITHER 1754
OR 1814

The plaques are inscribed and gilded with the second part of ‘Ode to the Red Cliff’ by Su Shi.
The front of the frst plaque is incised with two fve-clawed dragons surrounding a rectangular
cartouche containing the inscription Yu lin Su Shi Hou chibifu which may be translated, ‘Copy
of Su Shi’s Second Ode to the Red Cliff’. The back of the last plaque is incised with a further
fve-clawed dragon surrounded by clouds above crashing waves.

PROVENANCE:

Acquired circa 1900-1960s, and thence by descent within the family to the present owner.

The poem Hou chibifu (Second Ode to the Red Cliff), was written by the Northern Song dynasty
statesman, calligrapher and poet, Su Shi (1037-1101).The poem describes a nighttime boat trip with a
friend on the Yangzi River in Hubei where Su Shi was living in exile at the time.
