17TH-18TH CENTURY
The boy is standing with one foot behind the other and holding a
lotus leaf over his left shoulder. The fgure is drilled vertically through
the body.

A PALE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE CARVING OF YANZI
18TH CENTURY
The standing fgure is carved holding a milk bucket in one hand, and
a deer skin slung over his back. The stone is of an even pale tone with
dark russet inclusions to the reverse.

PROVENANCE:
Acquired prior to 1939, and thence by descent within the family.
Yanzi, an exemplar of flial piety, is shown holding a milk bucket and
clothed in a deer skin, which he wore in order to conceal himself while he
mingled with the herd in order to obtain doe’s milk for the treatment of his
parents’ eye disease.
