HUANG SHANSHOU (1855-1919)
Original name Yao, used the courtesy names Xuchu, Xudaoren,
sobriquets Xuchi Laoren, Lisheng. A native of Wujin, Jiangsu Province,
Huang was assistant magistrate for Zhili (now Hebei Province). Huang
endured poverty during childhood and determined to learn calligraphy
and painting. His calligraphy esteemed Han official script, Northern Wei
script, and those of Zheng Xie and Yun Shouping, capturing their spirit.
Huang was equally accomplished in painting figure, beauty, blue-green
landscape, bird-and-flower, ink dragon, grass-and-insect, ink plum,
and bamboo-and-rock subjects. After age fifty, he sold paintings for a
living in Shanghai, and was highly appraised by his contemporaries not
only for his artistic achievements but also for his loyal and generous
characters.
黃山壽( 1855-1919)
原名曜,字旭初, 字旭道人,晚號旭遲老人,又號麗生,江蘇武進
人。官直 同知。幼年貧困,專志書畫。張鳴珂《 寒松閣談藝瑣錄》
云旭初「年十餘,即能畫,依其戚,客華亭縣廨。居停張明府愛收
藏,所得改七薌真跡尤夥。出令勖初臨摹,摹成裝池之,呈稁巡撫張
文達公,公莫能辨也,由是聲譽日起。」其所作仕女,「畫幅古雅妍
秀,玉壺(改琦)、渭長(任熊)之後,所僅見也。」書工篆隸,畫
則人物仕女、青綠山水,花鳥竹石,無一不能。凡寫人物仕女,喜用
工筆重彩,雋雅研秀;山水以青綠為多,氣韻古逸。五十後,鬻畫上
海。楊逸《海上墨林》謂「南歸寓滬鬻畫,日無暇晷」,其為人「生
平言行篤誠,樂於為善」。
