YU LI (1862-1922)
Used courtesy name Dafu, sobriquet Sui’an, and was a native of
Shanyin, Zhejiang Province. As a noted student of Ren Yi, Yu was
known as one of the “Sixty Shanghai School Masters” in the late 19th
century. His figures, landscapes and flowers of vivid charm and often
with vibrant colours had fully captured the quintessence of Ren Yi’s
techniques and style. There were, however, significant changes in
styles at his middle age, when he started to paint after Xu Wei and
adopted Jin Nong’s calligraphic style. Yu was active as a painter in
Shanghai for more than 40 years and was quite good at business. He
once opened the Wenming Yaji (Civil and Elegant) Teahouse, which
was a popular meeting place for literati in Shanghai.
