YU YUE (1821-1907)
Courtesy name Yinfu, sobriquet Quyuan, Yu was a native of Deqing,
Zhejiang Province. He was awarded the jinshi degree in 1850 of
Emperor Daoguang’s reign, and his talent was particularly recognised
by Zeng Guofan, who was the examiner of his paper. He first served
in court as junior compiler at the Hanlin Academy and was appointed
in 1855 as the provincial educational commissioner in Henan. He was,
however, dismissed from office a year later under the attack of his
political opponent. Afterwards he stopped pursuing an official career
and spent his life writing and teaching at the Gujing Jingshe founded
by Ruan Yuan for three decades. His students included philologist and
philosopher Zhang Binlin and Wu Changshuo, a prominent painter,
calligrapher and seal carver of the late Qing period.

A prominent scholar in Chinese Classics, philology, literature as well as
operas, Yu excelled in calligraphy, seal and clerical scripts in particular.
He authored the “Fengqiao yebo” (A Night Mooring by the Maple
Bridge) stele (re-carved and erected in 1906) at the Hanshan Temple in
Suzhou. The stele enjoys great fame in China, Japan and South Korea,
not only for the poem itself, but also for Yu’s elegant calligraphy with an
air of antiquity.

俞樾（1821-1907）
字蔭甫，號曲園。浙江德清（今屬湖州)人。清道光三十年（1850）進
士，改庶吉士，授翰林院編修，國史館協修。咸豐五年（1855），任
河南學政，次年因御史曹登庸劾奏而罷官歸隱，致力於教育著書。
一八七五年，俞樾得友人資助，於蘇州建「曲園」。曾於蘇州紫陽、
上海求志、德清清溪、歸安龍湖等書院講學，後於杭州詁經精舍主講
三十餘年，弟子有章炳麟、吳昌碩等。
工書，尤擅篆、隸，又善以隸筆作楷書，尋常書劄，率以隸體書之，
別具一格。今姑蘇寒山寺之《楓橋夜泊》碑（重刻於光緒三十二年
（1906））即為其所作。該碑章法穩重古雅，筆意渾圓淋漓，在中、
日、韓皆備受推崇。著作宏富，凡五百龝餘卷，統曰《春在堂全書》，
含《群經平議》五十卷、《諸子平議》五十卷、《茶香室經說》十六
卷，《曲園俞樓雜纂》百龝卷等。
