LIN YANBO (1893-1944)
Birth name Songkun, he used the courtesy name Gongbo, and
sobriquet Bo daoren, adopted the name Yanbo during the Republic
Period (1911-1949). Lin was a Manchu under the Plain Blue Banner
and the family had been living in Beijing for generations. His father Fuqi
was a friend to Liu Xiling, a deaf master of finger painting, from whom
Yanbo learned the finger techniques, while at the same time following
the style of an earlier finger painting master Gao Qipei (1660-1734).
Lin was particularly good at painting landscapes, flowers, birds, and
figures. He taught at Peking Railroad University and Peking Fine Art
School on poetry and history of Chinese paintings and calligraphy.
Among his noted students are Sun Jusheng, Zheng Minzhong, Fu
Xueyi, and Zhao Shouyan. He authored a book titled Further on Finger
Paintings, in response to On Finger Paintings, a book by Gao Qipei’s
grandson Gao Bing.
林彥博(1893-1944)
本名嵩堃,字公博,別號博道人。滿族正藍旗人,世居京華,民國後
以林彥博之名行世。其父孚琦,字樸孫,曾任刑部右侍郎,光緒三十
四年(1908)署廣州將軍,宣統三年(1911)遇刺身亡。林彥博在光
緒宣統年間曾任禮部員外郎,民國後任平漢鐵路局編纂,並先後在北
平鐵路大學、北平藝術專科學校講授中國書畫史、詩詞等課程。自幼
聰慧,八歲能詩,有「神童」之譽。因其父與指畫家聾道人劉錫玲友
善,彥博私淑其技,遂能以指代筆,且上追高且園,對如何用指、蘸
色皆有獨到心得。一九二八年,應「中日美術協會」之邀,在大連舉
辦畫展,展出花鳥、山水並人物共八十幅,自此名聲大振,其後在瀋
陽、北京、天津等地多次舉辦展覽。其書亦佳,學黃山谷,得秀挺妍
媚之韻。孫菊生、鄭珉中、傅雪漪、趙守儼等均為其弟子。著有《續
指頭畫說》。
