SU LIUPENG (1791-1862)
Used the courtesy name Zhenqin, the sobriquet Zendaoren, also
named Luofu daoren. A native of Shunde, Guangdong Province, the
young Su Liupeng travelled to Luofu Mountain to study painting with
the monk painter Dekun. Su specialized in painting historical and genre
figures, many reflecting the lives of ordinary people during the mid-
Qing dynasty. His painting style was based on those of Song and Yuan
masters, and he was influenced by Shangguan Zhou and Huang Shen
of the Fujian school. Su’s delicate line paintings were especially fine.
He also excelled in finger painting, often using both brush and finger
to paint large scale figures. His work could be delicate or expressive.
Together with Su Renshan, the two were renowned as the “Two Su’s
of Lingnan”.
