PAN ZENGYING (1808-1878)
Courtesy name Shenfu, sobriquet Xingzhai, Pan was born to a prestige
family in Wuxian (now Suzhou), Jiangsu Province. He earned the jinshi
degree in 1841 of Emperor Daoguang’s reign, and served in court as
Grand Secretariat, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Personnel and the
Ministry of Works. Pan’s father and son were both jinshi, and his family
had a long scholarly tradition in epigraphy and played a major role in
the epigraphic movement in the late Qing Dynasty.
Pan Zengying was proficient in historiography and poetry, he also
excelled in painting and calligraphy. In his early years, most of his
paintings were freehand flowers in ink, with brushworks inspired by
Chen Chun and Xu Wei from the Ming Dynasty. Later he shifted his
focus on landscapes, following the Orthodox School masters of early
Qing Dynasty, namely, Wang Hui and Yun Shouping. He authored
a number of publications including Manuscripts of the Cijintang,
Collection of Manuscripts of the Xiao’oubo Studio and Collection of
Poems of the Xiao’oubo Studio.
潘曾瑩(1808-1878)
字申甫,號星齋。江蘇吳縣(今蘇州)人。父世恩(1769-1854),
乃乾隆五十八年(1793)進士,仕乾嘉道咸四朝,歷任戶部尚書、軍
機大臣、武英殿大學士、上書房總師傅、太子太傅。星齋乃道光二十
一年(1841)進士,咸豐年間歷官內閣學士、吏部右侍郎、工部左侍
郎。長於史學,喜作詩,工書畫。早年多寫水墨寫意花卉,筆法類清
藤、白陽。晚年專力山水,風格近石谷、南田。傳世著作有《賜錦堂
經進文稿》、《小鷗波館文鈔》、《小鷗波館詩鈔》、《小鷗波館畫
識畫寄》等。夫人陸氏韻梅,字琇卿,亦能詩善畫。子祖同(1829-
1902),字桐生,號譜琴,乃咸豐六年(1856)進士。因科場案充軍
新疆,自此歸田以書畫、藏書自娛。藏書印有「祖孫父子兄弟叔姪翰
林之家」一方。
