ZHU XIONG (1801-1864)
Used the courtesy name Jifu, sobriquets Mengquan, Diesheng, studio
names Mozhai jushi, Weimeishi, Xiaochanglu. A native of Xiushui,
Zhejiang Province, Zhu lived in Shanghai and made a living there by
selling paintings. Together with Zhang Xiong and Ren Xiong, known
as the “Three Xiongs of Shanghai.” He studied painting with Zhang
Xiong, and followed the styles of Chen Chun, Yun Shouping, and
Hua Yan in his flower paintings. Zhu was accomplished in painting
landscape, bird-and-flower, figures, and portraits, excelling in painting
flowers, bamboo and rocks. His style breaks free from the limitations
of past painters, his casual brushwork simple yet perfect; he was well-
regarded for his accomplishments during his time. Zhu Xiong was well
versed in seal carving. He had a passion for ceramics, once traveling
to Jingdezhen to design and make porcelain painting tools, and to
Yixing to make Zisha teaware. He was skilled in appraising ancient
ceramics, and named his studio “Letao”.
朱熊(1801-1864)
字吉甫,號夢泉、蝶生,齋號墨齋居士、味梅室、小長蘆。浙江秀水
縣人,寓居上海以賣畫為生,與張熊、任熊有「滬上三熊」之稱。師
承張熊,其花卉畫上宗陳淳、惲壽平和華嵒。工山水、花鳥、人物、
寫真,善畫花卉竹石,盡脫前人窠臼,隨意點筆,意頗清絕,別開生
面,能聲譽於時。精通篆刻,亦喜陶瓷器物,曾游歷南昌至景德鎮,
設計燒造瓷器畫具。又至宜興自製茗壺雜玩,定燒紫砂器。善於鑑別
古陶器,以「樂陶」名其室。
