backwards, looking towards its kin behind,
their forelegs folded and slightly raised and
the hind legs tucked underneath, wood stand.

a horse
Ming Dynasty
The recumbent horse typically carved with
its legs tucked beneath the body, its head
upturned and resting on a shoulder, the tail
and mane finely detailed, the mottled stone
with cloudy-white and black inclusions.

A grey and russet jade ‘cat and
dragonfly’ group
Late Ming Dynasty
The recumbent feline delicately carved with
diminutive features and clasping a dragonfly’s
wing in its mouth, the paws and fur finely
detailed, the sinuous curling tail tucked in and
peeking out of the left hind leg, the stone of a
pale grey tone with mottled white and russet
inclusions.
