AN INSIDE-PAINTED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE It is widely accepted that Ma Guangjia is the zi or given-name for
Ma Shaoxuan Ma Shaoxuan, see Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang,
Signed Ma Guangjia and seals Shao Xuan and dated guihai year, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, The Mary and George Bloch
corresponding to 1923 Collection, Vol. 4, Part 2, Inside Painted, pp. 373-375, no. 578.
Painted with a riverscape showing three figures in a boat, pavilions and Normally the given name appears in seal form and the name Ma
trees, the reverse with a twenty-seven-character inscription, with the Shaoxuan in regular script and seal form. Unexpectedly in our
seals Shao and Xuan, made for the Yun Ting (Cloud Pavilion); stopper. example, the inscription reads “Shaoxuan di (younger brother) Ma
2 1/4in (5.8cm) high Guangjia” “少宣弟馬光甲” followed by two painted seals reading
“Shao” and “Xuan”. This might suggest the hand of two artists at work,
$1,500 - 2,500 with Ma Guangjia being the younger brother or male relative of Ma
Shaoxuan.
