The dynamic movement and extreme high relief of the dragon chasing the 'Flaming Pearl' add a sense of drama to the flattened
form of this classical vase shape. The dragon's energy is further enhanced through its contrast to the tranquil gardens rendered in
low relief on vessel's walls below. Other Qing dynasty vases of this type include a greenish-white jade flattened baluster vase and
cover with a dragon pursuing a 'Flaming Pearl' against an archaistic taotie ground, sold at Christie's New York, 19th September
2007, lot 89; a small pale celadon jade vase of related form sold at Christie's London, 7th November 2014, lot 411; and a grayish-
white jade flattened baluster vase and cover carved with taotie motif and supporting a pair of dragons contesting a 'Flaming Pearl'
in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc. no. 02.18.435a,b).
