       Catalogue Note
       This pair of panels are an example of Wang Qi’s mature style, which he developed upon a trip to Shanghai in 1916, where he saw an
       exhibition of works by a group of painters called Yangzhou Baguai (the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou). Wang was so impressed by
       the paintings of Huang Shen, one of the Eight Eccentrics, that he started to emulate his style. See a set of four panels by Wang Qi,
       with a cyclical date corresponding to 1930, from the collection of Phynea Paroulakis, sold in these rooms, 17th-18th March 2015,
       lot 295; and another with luohan, dated in accordance to 1932, included in the exhibition Brush and Clay. Chinese Porcelain of the
       Early 20th Century, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1990, cat. no. 29, together with a smaller plaque painted with a lady on
       a raft, dated to 1927, cat. no. 24.
