AN YIXING ZISHA FIGURE
OF SHAKYAMUNI
LATE MING-EARLY QING DYNASTY,
17TH-18TH CENTURY
The Buddha is shown seated with both
hands resting on his bent left knee
supporting his chin. He wears loose robes
draped over his thin frame. His face, with
contemplative expression, is carved with
prominent cheekbones and a pronounced
ushnisha, and his curly beard, mustache
and hair are crisply rendered with tight snail
knots. The clay body is of a deep brown tone
with fecks of caramel brown throughout.
The back is inscribed Da Ming Zhengde
Wu Bangzuo zao (“Made by Wu Bangzuo
[during] the great Zhengde period”).
