                                                             The subject matter of grapes growing in large clusters on vines was
                                                             popular during the Ming dynasty, representing the wish for ceaseless
                                                             generations of sons and grandsons. The auspicious blessing is further
                                                             reinforced by the lotus motif which can be a pun for ‘in succession’
                                                             (lian).

                                                             Cloisonné enamel vessels decorated with grapevines from the Ming
                                                             dynasty are still to be found in the Qing Court Collection, see The
                                                             Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Metal-bodied
