A WHITE JADE FIGURE OF AN OFFICIAL, AND A WHITE JADE
FIGURE OF A FOREIGNER
Cleverly utilising the shape of the pebble to highlight the naturalistic
posture of the official leaning forward with one leg kneeling down, both
hands held together in front of the chest, wearing a long flowing robe
falling in soft pleats, the softly polished stone of even white tone, Song
Dynasty, 6.7cm (2 1/2in) high; the other standing figure depicted with
finely defined facial features, wearing a hooded robe, with one hand
holding a walking stick, the stone of even white tone, Yuan Dynasty,
4.5cm (1 3/4in) high. (2).

Compare a related white jade figure of a standing official, Tang or
Song dynasty, similarly depicted wearing a hat with a vertical flange
at the top and both hands held before the chest, in the collection of
Sir Joseph Hotung, illustrated by J.Rawson, Chinese Jade from the
Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, fig.27:1.

白玉文官玉質瑩潤，沁褐斑。圓雕，淺浮雕眼、鼻、口等五官，五官
端正，面留長鬚，雙眼前視，頭戴官帽，身著官服，腰間繫帶，雙手
拱合，身體前傾，單腿跪狀，似作行禮禀告狀。雕工簡潔老練，造型
呼之欲出。另一玉人白玉質，站立狀，面部渾圓，面帶笑容，身穿斗
篷，右手持手掌，以深刻線表現出衣褶紋理，更顯立體感，造型動靜
相生，十分精緻。

參考倫敦大英博物館藏何鴻卿爵士收藏一件白玉文官，其服飾風格與
此玉文官可資比較，見J. Rawson，《Chinese Jade from the Neolithic
to the Qing》，倫敦，1995年，圖27:1，該玉文官曾於1980年展出於
《Chinese Jades from Han to Ch’ing》展覽中，見J.C.Y. Watt編其圖
錄，編號93。
