number of thirty-nine jade ge in various forms were found in the tomb
of Fu Hao, at Yinxu in Anyang, Henan Province, demonstrating the
importance of ge amongst the noble class during the Shang dynasty.
Jade blades with a large circular hole at the yuan (the main body) section,
as in the present lot, are relatively rare in the Shang dynasty. The size of
the hole suggests that it could have been used for a semi-precious stone
inlay. See an example of a white and russet jade blade of similar form
with a pierced hole at the centre, late Shang dynasty, illustrated by Cai
Qingliang, Jades of Shang Dynasty, Aurora Art Museum, Taipei, 2010,
p.68, pl.29. Compare another similar example, Shang dynasty, excavated
from Mangzhangxiang at Luoshan, Henan Province, now in the Henen
Provincial Museum, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Jades
Unearthed in China, vol.5, Beijing, 2010, p.108.
