The present lot is remarkable in its refined carving and attention to
detail, subtly rendering a precise relief on the surface, demonstrating
skilfull craftsmanship. Compare a similar example of a jade sword
chape, Western Han dynasty, similarly carved in trapezoidal form,
decorated with a scrolling pattern, excavated from the tomb of the
King of Nanyue at Xianggang in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province,
illustrated in The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China,
vol.11, Beijing, 2010, p.169. See also an example of a jade sword
chape, Western Han dynasty, excavated from Lutiankuang in
Pingshuo, Shangxi Province, of slightly smaller size but similarly
decorated with cloud-scroll pattern, illustrated in ibid., vol.3, Beijing,
2010, p.232. Further compare a jade scabbard chape, Western
Han dynasty, formerly in the Edward and Louise B. Sonnenschein
collection, now in the Art Institute of Chicago, museum no.1950.731.
