Carvings of cicadas are among the most common shapes made in
jade for funerary purposes. Cicadas were placed inside the mouth
or on the eyes, as it is believed that with its unique life cycle, the
cicada symbolises rebirth. See a related jade cicada carving, Western
Han dynasty, in the Nanjing Museum, excavated from tomb no.4
at Dongyang in Xuyi, Jiangsu Province, illustrated in The Complete
Collection of Jades Unearthed in China, vol.7, Beijing, 2010, p.136.
For an example of a belt hook also carved with a ridge form, Han
dynasty, see one excavated from a Han dynasty tomb at Chanhe
district in Luoyang, Henan Province, illustrated by Gufang, The Pictorial
Handbook of Ancient Chinese Jades, Beijing, 2007, p.285.
