Female heroes – heroines – do occur, but they are rare. It may happen – as in one well-
known novel – that the heroine was a nun before launching forth into worldly adventures;
but the religious element plays no determining part in this.
Heron
lu
The heron in its favourite habitat of lakes and rivers crops up over and over again in the
work of the great Tang nature poets. Thus in Wang Wei:
Over the wide marshlands a heron spreads its yellow wings
Heron and lotus
And orioles are singing in the full summer trees.
