In ancient Chinese texts, the nine provinces of the earth are combined with
the eight heavenly directions, or the eight trigrams. Seventy-two weeks of
five days each, give 360 days – i.e. slightly more than a solar year.
The mythical Emperor Yao was said to have been 72 inches in height and to have
ruled for 72 years. The founder of the Han Dynasty is supposed to have had 72 black
marks on his thigh – an auspicious sign! We know that Confucius was 72 when he died;
and he is said to have had 72 disciples (as Jesus is said to have sent 72 disciples forth into
the world, one for each name of Jahweh).
