went from village to village performing short theatrical sketches about classical heroes
such as Yo Fei (a patriotic general), Shun (a mythical Emperor and supreme exemplar of
Youth on qi-lin with lotus (lian) and mouth organ (sheng): the meaning is
‘May the qi-lin bring (you) sons who will rise in unbroken (lian) line from
one stage to another (sheng)’
