Most well known as a court painter of colorful birds and flowers
under the Qianlong Emperor, Zou Yigui also painted figures in the
monochromatic baimiao tradition. Here the artist depicts a procession
of luohan, some accompanied by their mascots, witnessing divine
occurrences or engaged in discourse. Relying solely on subtle ink
washes and brushed lines, the detailed figures contrast with the
absence of a background setting. An album by Zou Yigui using the
same technique, but illustrating stories from the life of Su Dongpo, was
sold at Chirstie’s Hong Kong 28 May 2012 lot 2776.
