This unusual view is of Shamian (Shameen or Shamin) Island to the
west of the hongs at Canton. On the hill at the far right is the Five-
Story Pagoda (Zhenhai Tower), now the Guangzhou Museum in Yuexiu
Park. After the Second Opium War and the destruction of the hongs,
this area was given as concessions to the British and the French.
Prominent within the view is an American side-wheeler, a steam
powered vessel that stands in stark contrast to the smaller, local
craft that crowd the river. Although its visible differences give the ship
a foreign appearance, paddle wheel ships had been a presence in
Chinese naval life since the 5th century.
