The matte glaze, described as eggshell white (luanbai) and the
impressed character shu (pivot or place) associate this dish with
the shufu group of wares produced during the Yuan dynasty for the
Mongol rulers under the supervision of a government bureau, the
Shumei yuan. Dishes of similar shape and foot construction, identified
as shufu ware and described with a luanbai glaze, were excavated
from an abandoned cellar in Gao’an county, Jiangxi province in 1980,
along with hundreds of Longquan and blue and white porcelains from
the Yuan period. See Liu Jincheng, Gao’an yuan dai jiao cang ciqi
(Beijing, 2006) for dishes of similar size and foot configuration: p. 80
(height 4.5cm, diameter 16.1cm, diameter of foot 5.8cm) and p. 81
(height 4.2cm, diameter 16.1cm, diameter of foot 5.8 cm and weight
280 grams). In comparison, this lot measures 4.2cm high, diameter of
the foot 5.4cm and weight 242 grams.
